Success of Canadian Immigration

The Canadian immigration system has received praise from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), particularly for its effective recruitment of skilled foreign workers and welcoming new immigrants to live in Canada.

According to the OECD report, the Canadian immigration system is one of the most successful in the world and serves as an example for other countries to duplicate.

The Express Entry system for immigration to Canada, which expedites the processing of Canadian immigration applications for skilled foreign workers, received high marks from the OECD.

The OECD praises the Canadian immigration system.

One Canadian immigration program which qualifies for Express Entry to Canada is the Federal Skilled Worker Program which is based on a points system and requires one year of full-time paid work experience in an eligible occupation during the previous 10 years, among other criteria.

The Federal Skilled Trades Program is also eligible for Express Entry immigration to Canada and an immigrant needs to have two years of full-time paid work experience in a qualifying skilled trade during the past five years, along with satisfying other requirements.

Immigrants who qualify for the FSWP or FSTP (or other eligible Canadian immigration program) must file an Express Entry profile and if they receive an Invitation to Apply, they will have 60 days to apply for immigration to Canada.

The Express Entry process usually takes around 6-12 months, but the amount of time can vary.

Furthermore, the OECD report states that living in Canada is highly appealing to skilled foreign workers from around the world.

This is understandable, considering yearly international surveys have consistently rated Canada as the #1 best country for quality of life, and other surveys have shown Canadians to have the most favorable attitudes toward immigrants.

The Canadian immigration minister when the OECD report was released, Ahmed Hussen, who is himself an immigrant from Somalia, noted that Canada needs to maintain an ambitious immigration plan due to the millions of Canadian workers who are retiring.

For the past several years, the annual goal for immigration to Canada has steadily increased, going from around 250,000 new Canadian permanent residents per year to about 300,000 and now over 400,000 annually.

The Canadian immigration goal announced for 2022 is a record 431,645 new permanent residents – mostly skilled foreign workers and their immediate family members.

Skilled foreign workers are in very high demand in Canada, because there are hundreds of thousands of Canadian job vacancies, but not enough workers to fill them.

As millions of Canadians retire this decade, the need for skilled immigrants with good English or French language abilities is only going to increase.
