Employers Are Hiring in Canada
Employers in Canada are facing a challenge finding workers to hire for approximately 900,000 Canadian job openings.
The national unemployment rate in Canada is a record low 5.3% and close to half of all Canadian job openings remain vacant after being advertised for 60 days.
As a result, many Canadian employers have been forced to offer higher wages and/or lower the job requirements in an attempt to recruit or retain workers.
According to the chief economist at BDC, the worker shortage in Canada is mainly due to the country’s aging population retiring from the work force, rather than a result of the pandemic disruptions.
The BDC chief economist also expects that employers in Canada will continue to find it difficult to find qualified workers for at least five years, until most of the “baby boomer” generation has retired.
Statistics Canada reports that the percentage of the Canadian population 65 years of age or older increased substantially from 14.4% in 2011 to 18.5% in 2021 and it is forecast to climb even higher in the coming years.

In order to compensate for the millions of workers in Canada who are retiring this decade, the government has been setting record goals for annual Canadian immigration levels.
For example, 405,000 people were approved for Canadian permanent residency in 2021 and the goal for 2022 is 431,645 new immigrants.
What this means for skilled foreign workers with good English or French language skills is there is currently a job-seeker’s market, in which there are almost one million Canadian job openings to choose from and many employers are willing to offer higher wages, better benefits and reduce the criteria for the position, because there are not enough qualified workers available in Canada.
Skilled immigrants who want to work in Canada will also generally need to have an occupation that qualifies for Canadian immigration.
There are hundreds of eligible occupations that are in high-demand in Canada, including management positions, jobs that require a university degree and skilled trades.
Besides the standard job skills that are usually associated with a particular occupation, many Canadian employers are also looking for workers with certain “soft” job skills.
According to the director of research, evaluation and knowledge mobilization at the Future Skills Centre of Ryerson University, employers in Canada are particularly interested in workers who possess emotional and social skills, and who can engage in critical thinking and active listening.
