Canadian Immigration Increases
On August 24, 2022, Canadian Immigration Minister Sean Fraser issued a press release which said that the application processing time for Express Entry immigration to Canada has returned to its normal six-month standard, like it was before the global pandemic.
Express Entry is the Canadian immigration management system for skilled foreign workers who apply for immigration to Canada through the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program or Canadian Experience Class Program.
Foreign workers also have the option to apply for immigration to Canada through the Provincial Nominee Program using the Express Entry management system.
The Canadian immigration minister reported that during the first seven months of 2022, there were a record 275,000 immigrants approved to become new permanent residents of Canada.
He further stated that Canada was on target to reach its goal for a record 431,000 immigrants to become Canadian permanent residents in 2022.
By comparison, a record 405,000 immigrants were granted Canadian permanent residency in 2021.
Between January 1, 2022, and July 31, 2022, Mr. Fraser revealed that 349,000 temporary Canadian work permits were issued to foreign workers, which is already much higher than the 199,000 work permits that were approved for all of 2021.
Canada is one of the world’s top choices for international students, which can seen by the 360,000 Canadian study permits that have already been issued in the first seven months of this year.
There were nearly 560,000 Canadian study permits approved for international students during 2021, which was 31% higher than the record number granted in 2019 prior to the start of the global pandemic.
The government is currently in the process of improving the Canadian immigration system, by spending $85 million CAD this year to hire 1,250 new employees by the end of autumn and make other enhancements to help speed up the application procedure.
Mr. Fraser said he believes the processing of other Canadian visas, such as for visitors, should return to normal by the end of the year.
At the start of his press release, the Canadian immigration minister declared, “Canada is a destination of choice for people looking for a new place to work, study and build their lives with their families, and immigration is key to helping employers fill hundreds of thousands of vacant positions across the country and grow our economy.”
Canada is experiencing a major shortage of workers who are needed to fill approximately one million vacant jobs in Canada.
